What is irritable bowel syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome refers to any complication of the gastrointestinal tract for which no physical cause can be identified. This includes complaints such as abnormal bowel movements, flatulence, pain or nausea

At what point is it irritable bowel syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome is a so-called diagnosis of exclusion. This means that it is only diagnosed as soon as any other possible causative disease (such as bowel cancer) can be ruled out. For a definite diagnosis, the symptoms must also last for at least three months.

What are the triggers of irritable bowel syndrome?

The complete pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome has not yet been conclusively clarified. However, stress, which activates the sympathetic nervous system (part of the involuntary nervous system), is one of the clearly identifiable triggers of the bowel disease. This then triggers the diarrhoea typical of irritable bowel syndrome.

This symptom describes an accelerated intestinal passage during which the faeces have too little time to thicken and consequently leave the body in liquid form. A process that serves evolutionary biology to eliminate toxic substances as quickly as possible. In irritable bowel patients, however, the sympathetic nervous system reacts under the influence of stress even to harmless foods.

What are possible symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome?

Typical irritable bowel symptoms include:

  • Non-specific pain mostly distributed over the entire abdomen
  • Bloating with flatulence (especially after meals)
  • Urge to defecate with diarrhoea. Sometimes also as or in combination with "irritable stomach", i.e. a feeling of fullness with pain in the upper abdomen.
