Avi Medical receives 28.5 million euros in capital for the GP practice of the future

Munich, 07.06.2021
  • New concept combines the best of medicine and software
  • Three Munich practices already open - long-term expansion throughout Germany
  • Financing round led by Berlin-based health tech fund Heal Capital and New York investor Addition

Munich, 7 June 2021. The first two GP practices of the digital healthcare company Avi Medical have been in operation in the centre of Munich for a few weeks now - practice number three starts today in the Schwabing district. Avi Medical's group of practices stands for a new, modern style of treatment: patient-friendly, technology-supported and with a special human touch. The concept of the three founders - a medical doctor, a product expert and a serial entrepreneur - also convinced international investors. They now provided Avi Medical with 28.5 million euros in a Series A financing round led by the Berlin-based HealthTech fund Heal Capital and the New York investor Addition.

Julian Kley, Christoph Baumeister and Vlad Lata (from left) founded Avi Medical in 2020 with the aim of reshaping primary care in Germany and Europe. Evidence-based medicine in combination with the targeted use of modern technologies go hand in hand in Avi Medical's concept - in the interest of the best possible treatment for each individual patient. "We see ourselves as pioneers in the field of GP care," emphasises co-founder and CEO Vlad Lata. "The vision that drives Chris, Julian and me is care that enhances doctor-patient contact with modern digital possibilities. Not as an end in itself, but to meaningfully support patient care wherever possible."

Avi Medical is the first company in Germany that completely integrates medicine and software and provides its doctors with a complete concept from a single source.

Avi Medical's new medical practice concept is designed to offer patients contemporary treatment according to the latest medical standards. The visit to the doctor starts with an uncomplicated online appointment booking. Patients will soon be filling out their medical history forms on their smartphones at home, not in the waiting room. The integration of telemedicine ensures maximum convenience: depending on the reason for treatment, patients can opt for a video consultation from home instead of coming to the practice in person. The opening hours - on selected days as early as 7 a.m. or until 8 p.m. and without lunch break - are so broadly designed that all patient groups can quickly find their preferred appointment. In addition, the Avi Medical team treats all patients equally and does not differentiate between those with statutory and private insurance.

The doctors in the Avi Medical group practice are permanently employed and therefore have no financial risk. They benefit from flexible working time models with regulated and plannable working hours, as well as the possibility to communicate with patients via video chat from their home office. Thanks to state-of-the-art technology support, their administrative workload is significantly reduced - the bottom line is that doctors have more time for their original medical treatment activities.

In addition to Heal Capital and Addition, existing investors Picus Capital, Vorwerk Ventures, ID Invest, 3VC and Claret Capital Partners as well as numerous business angels, including Daniel Dines from UI Path and the founders of Flatiron Health, Alasco, Finn.auto, Freeletics, M4Capital and Inventures, are participating in the financing round. Avi Medical will use the capital received in the financing round to further develop software and accelerate the growth of the group of practices across Germany. The first two GP practices under the Avi Medical brand are located in the heart of Munich at Luisenstraße 1, right next to the main railway station, and near the Hofstatt shopping centre in the old town. Practice number 3 opens today, 7 June, in Herzogstraße in Munich-Schwabing. More practices will follow, first in Bavaria, then throughout Germany. "In the long term, every patient in Germany will have the easiest access to high-quality, state-of-the-art medicine," says Vlad Lata.

Eckhardt Weber, General Partner at Heal Capital, one of Europe's leading HealthTech funds, said: "We strongly believe that technology can redefine healthcare and guarantee better, cheaper and simpler patient care. Avi Medical's concept of timely care ultimately benefits all stakeholders: patients, physicians and insurers."
Jason Schneider of Addition emphasised: "Patient needs have changed during the pandemic and digital transformation in healthcare has accelerated, especially in terms of innovation. We look forward to working with the team at Avi Medical to transform patient-doctor interactions into personalised digital experiences."

For Robin Godenrath, Founding Partner & Managing Director of tech investor Picus Capital, Avi Medical has a compelling approach: "We prefer to work with exceptional founding teams who have identified a massive market opportunity and are determined to challenge the status quo and shape the world of tomorrow. It was time to bring a breath of fresh air into GP practices and holistically integrate digital solutions into patient healthcare. This ultimately benefits everyone."

And all with a human touch: Avi Medical is building patient-centric, technology-enabled medical practices that deliver an unprecedented convenient, personalised and holistic digital patient experience.

Avi Medical GmbH was launched in Munich in January 2020.

About the founders:

Vlad Lata, CEO Avi Medical, co-founder and CTO of KONUX - Vlad is a firm believer in the "Power of Algorithms" and that intelligent use of data can significantly improve our quality of life. As co-founder and CTO of KONUX, he developed one of the first AI solutions deployed in Europe. For one of the most conservative industries of all - the railways - he recognised and unlocked the huge potential of data. Inspired by this success, Vlad took on another, much bigger - if not the biggest - challenge: Making people healthy and also keeping them healthy in the long run. It was time for a company that uses the power of data to help doctors achieve better medical outcomes.

Christoph Baumeister, CPO Avi Medical, co-founder of nello - Chris has already co-founded two startups and served as CEO with a strong focus on product and marketing: at LOCUMI LABS, he developed an innovative solution for last-mile parcel delivery. At nello, he launched a completely new smart home product for keyless home entry. After experiencing first-hand as a type 1 diabetic how backward the German healthcare system is and how one can successfully take charge of one's own treatment through knowledge about one's own disease, the plan matured in him to do it better. Avi Medical thus became a matter of the heart for him: "Visits to the doctor must finally arrive in the 21st century".

Julian Kley COO Avi Medical, physician, previously Principal at BCG - With a family of doctors in his background, medicine was an early companion for Julian. After graduating from medical school at the University of Bonn, however, he asked himself a fundamental question: Is our healthcare system properly positioned for the future? What would have to change? He therefore decided to change perspective and better understand global health systems, interrelationships and innovation with the strategy consultancy Boston Consulting Group. He worked mainly for large corporations, but six years later it was clear to him that these companies would not save the health system: They either lacked access to patients or the ability to use data properly. So he took the reins himself and became one of the founders of Avi Medical.
