What is flatulence?

A healthy intestine produces gases such as carbon dioxide or methane when decomposing food. Flatulence occurs when these substances are produced in excess and subsequently escape through the anus. 

Medically, a decision is made between two types of flatulence. In the case of so-called primary flat ulence, the phenomenon itself forms the disease. Secondary flatulence is flatulence that occurs as a symptom of other underlying diseases or problems.

At what point is it flatulence?

Flatulence is present as soon as other accompanying symptoms are added to the regular gas excretion. These include reduced stool frequency (less than three times a week), a feeling of tension or abdominal pain.

What are the triggers of flatulence?

Triggers of primary flatulence include:

  • A disturbed interaction of the pelvic floor muscles
  • Abnormalities of the intestinal musculature
  • Diseases in the so-called enteric nervous system (intestinal nervous system, which is not controlled voluntarily and acts independently of the central nervous system).
  • Irritable bowel

Triggers of secondary flatulence are again: 

  • An improper diet (for example, too little fluid and/or fibre)
  • Medication (especially opioids, anticonvulsants, neuroleptics and antidepressants). 
  • toxic substances such as drugs
  • Lack of exercise
  • Diseases such as hypothyroidism, neurological disorders, diabetes, rheumatism and intolerances
  • Constrictions in the intestine up to intestinal obstruction
  • Psychological stress

What are possible symptoms of flatulence?

Typical symptoms of flatulence include: 

  • "Winch"
  • a reduced stool frequency
  • a hard stool consistency
  • a feeling of incomplete bowel emptying
  • Tension feeling
  • Abdominal pain
