What is rheumatism?

In medicine, rheumatism refers to a variety of clinical pictures. However, the term usually refers to rheumatoid arthritis. Those affected by this autoimmune disease suffer from a disorder of the body's own defence system, which as a result mainly attacks the inner skin of the joints. The result is sometimes considerable damage tothe joints.

At what point is it rheumatism?

Several values are necessary for a reliable diagnosis of rheumatism. These are, among others: 

  • Joint status 
  • Symptom duration
  • Blood values
  • Ultrasound, X-ray and MRI showing changes in the joints 
  • Abnormalities in the joint punctate

What are the triggers of rheumatism?

As with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, the trigger of the autoimmune disease rheumatism is unknown at present.

What are possible symptoms of rheumatism?

Typical symptoms of rheumatism include:

  • general fatigue
  • Night sweats
  • Muscle pain
  • slight fever
  • In the joints: pain with swelling, stiffness (especially in the morning), nodules (rheumatic nodules).
  • Pain of the tendon insertions and bursae
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome (tingling and pain in the wrists and hands at night)
  • if organs are also affected: Inflammation of the pleura if the lungs are affected, pericarditis if the heart is affected, conjunctivitis if the eyes are affected and redness and circulatory disorders if the vessels are affected.
