What is back pain?

Back pain is an umbrella term for complaints in the entire spinal area. The clinical picture is divided into the following four factors

  • Duration. Possible conditions are: Acute back pain (the complaints have lasted less than six weeks), subacute back pain (the complaints have lasted longer than six weeks), chronic back pain (the complaints have lasted more than twelve weeks) and recurrent back pain (recurring complaints).
  • Localisation. Possible are: Pain in the area of the chest, the loins or the entire back
  • Intensity. This ranges on a scale from zero to four
  • Cause. Possible here are: Non-specific (complaints without pathological cause) and specific back pain

At what point is it back pain?

The diagnosis "back pain" is extremely individual and depends solely on the subjective perception of the patient. It can therefore also be present if no objectively recognisable, pathological cause fortissue damage in the area of the spine can be identified medically. The only decisive factor is the statement and pain assessment of the person affected.

What are the triggers of back pain

Up to 85 percent of all cases of back pain are non-specific in nature. They thus have no recognisable pathological triggers. Specific back pain, on the other hand, is often triggered by the following disorders :

  • Inflammations
  • Degeneration of the vertebral bodies (e.g. fractures in the context of osteoporosis), intervertebral discs (e.g. herniated disc), vertebral joints (facet joint syndrome) or back muscles.
  • Congenital spinal curvatures (scoliosis) or stiffening of the spine
  • Organ damage that radiates into the back. For example, inflammation of the pancreas, intestine, gall bladder or heart muscle.
  • Rare: Tumours
  • Neurological diseases (e.g. shingles)

What are possible symptoms of back pain?

The typical back pain symptom is pain in the spine that causes suffering. However, these can be very different. Possible are:

  • Pain of a dull, burning or stabbing nature
  • Pain that increases slowly or comes on suddenly
  • Pain that is permanent or subsides in the meantime
  • Pain that persists at rest or only occurs with certain movements or postures

Treatment of back pain at Avi Medical

Our experienced doctors are at your side with numerous medical measures for the comprehensive therapy of your back pain.

The first important step is a comprehensive medical history and diagnosis. This should identify potentially dangerous underlying diseases and prevent the disorder from becoming chronic.

If there is a reasonable suspicion of a serious underlying disease, the diagnosis includes laboratory diagnostics or referral for an X-ray or MRI.

This first step is usually followed by symptomatic therapy. This includes:

  • Strengthening the muscular and ligamentous apparatus through exercise therapy
  • Training to avoid awkward movements and education on preventive measures
  • Progressive muscle relaxation
  • In rare cases: a gradual drug therapy starting with low-dose analgesics up to short-term therapy with opioid analgesics.
